Viral hepatitis in young adults in Accra, Ghana, is associated with Australia antigen (H.A.A.). Sera from 85 patients in hospital with viral hepatitis were available for determinations of H.A.A. Of the 16 patients whose serum was obtained within the first week of symptoms, 15 were positive. Subsequently, antibody to Australia antigen appeared. These observations are similar to the events in experimental serum sickness and strongly suggest that circulating immune complexes may be responsible for at least the arthritic manifestations of hepatitis associated with Australia antigen.
Australia antigen andhepatitis: Areview YVONNEE. COSSART Fromthe Virus ReferenceLaboratory, CentralPublic HealthLaboratory, Colindale Avenue, London The description of Australia antigen by Blumberg, Alter, andVisnich in , andthe subsequent dis-covery of its association with hepatitis (Blumberg, Sutnick, and London, ) have stimulated re-. Australian aborigine, and the term Australia antigen was coined (1, 2, 3,). This antigen is almost certainly identical to Prince’s SH- antigen (4), and to avoid confusion the term hepatitis-associated antigen (HAA) is now con sidered by many to be more appropriate (5). It was some time before it became apparent.
A series of research and clinical observations led to confirmation that the "Australia antigen" caused hepatitis B and thus, this was how the hepatitis B virus was discovered in Two years later, Dr. Blumberg and Dr. Irving Millman invented the hepatitis B vaccine, which is another fascinating story! An antigen detected in the blood during the incubation period of serum hepatitis. Baruch Blumberg describes the steps in isolating and purifying the Australia antigen from the hepatitis B virus. Description: Baruch Blumberg, MD, PhD, describes the processes involved in isolating and purifying the Australia antigen from the hepatitis B virus.
He patented this method for creating the hepatitis B vaccine in Copyright. If serological testing 4–8 weeks after the primary course shows levels of antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) of hepatitis B virus infection by testing for serological markers, including antibodies to anti-HBs and hepatitis B core antigen.
The Australia antigen is a marker of hepatitis, which is a viral inflammation of the liver. The discovery and analysis of the antigen played a crucial part in efforts to fight the disease. The link between the antigen and hepatitis made it possible to screen blood for hepatitis. Hepatitis B.

Blumberg discovered "Australia antigen," which he thought was a marker or cause of leukemia. Years later, Alfred Prince concluded that the antigen was actually part of the hepatitis B virus/5(2). Australia Antigen in Chronic Hepatitis in Australia Article (PDF Available) in British Medical Journal 1() February with 91 Reads How we measure 'reads'.
SH antigen was detected in sera of patients with serum hepatitis and soon SH antigen and Australia antigen were found to be identical and selectively associated with serum hepatitis. Innm Dane particles were detected in Australia antigen positive sera and linked to the virus of serum hepatitis.
Hepatitis B surface antigen, HBsAg (‘Australian antigen’ component), characteristically appears in the serum of the majority of patients with acute hepatitis B during the first few days of the illness and tests to recognize this antigen are valuable diagnostically (Table ).During the last few years, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) have become widely used, using commercially.
Abstract. An epidemic of infectious hepatitis involving 99 patients and employees of a state mental hospital revealed Australia antigen Au(1) to be absent from the blood of all but one of the subjects when tested at six weeks, three months, nine months and 12 to 18 months after onset of jaundice.
blood transfusions. Australia antigen, later called hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), was first described inand the Dane particle (complete hepatitis B virion) was identified in Identification of serologic markers for HBV infection followed, which helped clarify the natural history of the disease.

PMID: Discovery of Australia antigen Outbreaks of jaundice likely to have been caused by HBV date back to before the 19th century. But the viral cause remained elusive untilwhen Australia antigen — so called because it was first identified in the serum of an Aboriginal Australian — was isolated from the serum of leukaemia patients, 2 and.A routine search for Australia antigen in 29, blood donors at the Orleans Hospital Blood Transfusion centre led to the discovery of apparently healthy carriers.
Liver function tests were carried out in 80 of the latter and revealed abnormalities in 34 of them.
